So, about all these news articles circulating about how Muslims are condemning the Paris attacks.
Great, the whole world should be condemning the attacks.
But there is an undeniable racism inherent to the ways these race/religious/ethnic specific proclamations of condemnation are framed. The world expects them. The world expects “good” Muslims to condemn terrorism.
It’s the expectation that Muslim communities ascribe to assimilation and say “oh were not like “those” muslims” and are therefore not deserving of the harmful violent stereotypes that profile them. Because as a Muslim, white supremacist western geopolitics reduce you to either a terrorist or someone who publicly and continually denounces terrorism. Your entire identity must exist on that binary.
When was the last time all white folk were expected to condemn a mass shooter? When.was the last time all white folk were expected to apologize and condemn the existence of the KKK? When was the last time a white man in his 30s walking into a mall, school, or movie theater had to make some proclamation to prove he wasn’t one of “those white men”?
