Hive Mind: Reflections of Culpability and Change

…a lot on my mind today

Today, one of my students was defiant. She is seven. She adamantly refused to follow directions. She even told me “NO”.

How did I feel? Well, as you might expect. Frustrated, a little angry, somewhat embarrassed. The usual. I gave an ultimatum. Follow directions or there will be a consequence. I told her I didn’t know what it would be but that I reserved the right to decide later.

And you know what happened?

Take some guesses:

Called admin? Nope

Called the cops? Nope (Now, wouldn’t that be so silly…even if we had them on campus, which we don’t.)

Yelled? Nope

Nope. I waited. Then I taught the lesson. Then I moved on to the next one. And the next one. And then the next one. And you know what happened?

Somewhere in there, she started working and even worked further ahead. At recess…
